The main principles
A cloud is composed of tiny liquid or solid water particules that are present in the atmosphere. It can also contain acids, industrial steam particules, dust or smoke.
The small droplets present in the cloud are kept in balance and the phenomena of rainfall is mainly due to the growth and weight of these droplets which become too large.
The sensor used to measure rainfall is a pluviometer, it measures the total amount of water which fell down per square meter.
There are mainly 3 categories of sensors : pluviometers for which the result can be read, those which can be weighed, and those with tipping bucket.
Our advantages
Formulas for correction specified by METEO FRANCE, depending on the type of pluviometer, have been integrated in our stations. Depending on the configuration, the stations can register (as well as the total amount of rainfall), when the rainfall started, how long it lasted and how strong the rainfall was.
Some advice
In order to obtain the best measurement possible, the pluviometer should be set up in a space without any obstacles, on flat ground, and not on terrasses and roofs. It should be set up in such a way as to guarantee that the catchment area and tipping bucket is on a horizontal surface.
According to WMO recommendations, the catchment area should be at a distance of 1 meter from the ground.
In some cases, one should consider the heating option. This means that we can
- avoid the pluviometer being clogged up by snow, hail and frost
- have a general measurement including snow or hail precipitation
- avoid measurement errors caused by the icing of water which has been temporarily accumulated in the bucket
