Vertical cloud profile measurement
The main principles
The function of the 'cloud profiler' is to measure the vertical profile of the reflectivity/vertical velocity. This equipment is an autonomous system that functions 24 hours a day, it automatically restarts when a line failure occurs.
The cloud profiler is a pulsed Doppler RADAR. It uses cloud droplets as a tracer. The range of this instrument is essentially dependent on the presence of humidity/cloud droplets.
The Doppler velocity measurement associated with the advected droplets/ice crystals makes up the radial component of the movement of these particles. This movement is the particles' fall speed modified by the up/down drafts.
The cloud profiler generates high powered pulses (vertically from the site) and receives echoes reflected by the cloud droplets. After amplification, appropriate signal processing is used to determine the vertical wind profile.
Our advantages
PDN 35G is able to operate in an autonomous way 24 hours a day and we can provide you with a customized user interface. This cloud profiler uses the most progressive techniques in relation to signal processing which have been perfected and tested on wind profilers. The PDN 35G is the first European cloud radar installed in Cabauw for KNMI. Its sensitivity has been thoroughly optimized, and the average power is maximized thanks to the use of a TWT tube of 100W peak power / 25W average.
Some advice
The shelter should be installed on a flat hard ground in order to ensure stability. The material inside of the shelter being of high technology, we would advice the shelter be equipped with air-conditioning and installed on a site protected against intrusion.
